New Churches of Scientology Grand Openings
CLEARWATER, FLORIDA •
More than 4,000 Scientologists gathered in downtown Clearwater, Florida, on Sunday, June 29, to mark the dedication of the landmark Coachman Building. The historic structure now stands transformed as the religious training and counseling center for more than 2,000 members comprising the ecclesiastical ministry of the Flag Land Base, the international spiritual headquarters of Scientology.
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA •
On the evening of May 3, more than 2,500 Scientologists from across Australia filled Castlereagh Street to inaugurate the Harbor City’s new Church of Scientology Ideal Organization (Ideal Org).
In honor of the historic occasion, the ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion and Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center, Mr. David Miscavige, traveled to Sydney to lead the dedication ceremonies.
The Church’s home, a heritage site originally constructed in 1908, overlooks Hyde Park and stands amid several of the city’s most treasured landmarks—including Town Hall, the Queen Victoria Building and Sydney Tower. The Church meticulously restored the building’s historic features, most notably the brick pilasters and bronze-glazed glass curtain that distinguish its Castlereagh façade.
KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN •
On Saturday, December 7, amidst a burst of confetti and beneath a cloud of balloons, a ribbon was cut on the new Church of Scientology Ideal Organization of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. More than 4,000 Scientologists and guests from across Asia and Oceania were joined by national and city dignitaries for the dedication ceremony.
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA •
On Sunday, August 25, more than a thousand Scientologists and guests gathered for the grand opening of the new Church of Scientology Mission of Los Feliz. The dedication ceremony marked the completion of its newly constructed premises in the heart of Los Feliz Village.
With a growing congregation, the Mission outgrew its former building and began the search for a new home. They found an ideal location at the corner of Hillhurst Avenue and Avocado Street, where they built their new 8,000-square-foot Mission from the ground up. Its Spanish Colonial Revival design is in keeping with the prevalent architectural style in Los Feliz and neighboring Hollywood Hills. The building represents a fourfold expansion and now stands ready to accommodate the Mission’s parishioners and introduce those new to Dianetics and Scientology.
PORTLAND, OREGON •
On Saturday, May 11, the Church of Scientology Portland celebrated the grand opening of their new home in the city’s historic downtown quarter. More than 2,500 Scientologists and guests joined city and state dignitaries for the dedication ceremony.
PRETORIA, GAUTENG •
On Saturday, February 23, more than a thousand Scientologists and their guests assembled to celebrate the opening of the new Church of Scientology Pretoria. National, provincial and city dignitaries as well as South African royalty joined Church officials for the dedication ceremony.
The Church’s new home stands on Stanza Bopape Street neighboring the Union Buildings, official seat of the South African government and home to the presidential offices. The campus, less than a block from Embassy Row, is comprised of five heritage homes originally constructed at the turn of the 20th century. The Church meticulously restored the Edwardian-style buildings and altogether transformed them into a 21st century Ideal Organization (Ideal Org) to accommodate an ever-growing congregation.
CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO •
More than a thousand Scientologists and their guests from across Canada and the U.S. Great Lakes region gathered on February 9, 2013, to celebrate the opening of the new Church of Scientology of Cambridge, Ontario. Joining Church officials for the dedication ceremony were national and provincial dignitaries.
PADOVA, ITALY •
More than 7,000 Scientologists and their guests gathered from across Italy and Europe to celebrate the grand opening of the Church of Scientology Ideal Organization (Ideal Org) of Padova on Saturday, October 27. Church officials presided over the opening joined by national, provincial and city dignitaries.
WASHINGTON, D.C. •
On Wednesday, September 12, national dignitaries joined more than a thousand Scientologists and guests to celebrate the grand opening of the Church of Scientology’s National Affairs Office in Washington, D.C.
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL •
On August 21, national and city dignitaries as well as religious leaders joined Scientologists from Israel and 27 nations to celebrate the opening of the new Center of Scientology in Tel Aviv. The Center is the first Ideal Scientology Organization (Ideal Org) in the Middle East and designed to both serve the growing membership and provide Scientology-sponsored humanitarian programs throughout the region.
Located on Jerusalem Boulevard in Tel Aviv’s ancient port city of Jaffa, the Center’s new home is the historic Alhambra Theater. Originally constructed in 1937, the landmark is remembered by generations as the premier venue for the greatest names in Arab and Israeli music and theater. In the 1980s, the building was converted into a commercial center and by the first decade of the 21st century, its glory had faded.
LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA •
On Saturday, July 28, fifteen hundred Scientologists from across the San Francisco Bay Area gathered to rededicate the Church of Scientology Los Gatos.
The ribbon cutting marked the transformation of the Ideal Church of Scientology (Ideal Org) to better accommodate its ever-growing congregation and to extend Church social betterment and humanitarian programs to all communities along the Santa Cruz Mountains and southwestern San Jose.
BUFFALO, NEW YORK •
More than a thousand Buffalo Area Scientologists gathered on Saturday, June 30, to celebrate the rededication of the Church of Scientology Buffalo.
PHOENIX, ARIZONA •
Amid a burst of confetti and a flight of balloons, the ribbon was parted on the new Church of Scientology Ideal Organization of Phoenix on Saturday, June 23. More than 1,500 Scientologists, neighbors and dignitaries joined Church officials for the dedication ceremony.
Located on the southeast corner of 44th Street and Indianola Ave, the new Church stands just a mile south of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard’s historic home in the shadow of Camelback Mountain. It was there in 1952 he arrived at the monumental discovery that gave birth to the Scientology religion: the isolation, identification and exteriorization of the human spirit. During the formative years of the religion, Scientologists traveled to this city from across three continents to hear Mr. Hubbard speak. He delivered over 600 lectures in Phoenix—more than in any other city in the world. These lectures, along with seminal Scientology works he authored in Phoenix, comprise a significant portion of the religion’s fundamental scripture.
DENVER, COLORADO •
On Saturday, June 16, more than a thousand Scientologists, guests, and state and city dignitaries assembled in Lower Downtown Denver to dedicate a new Church of Scientology.
SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA •
Thousands of Bay Area Scientologists gathered on Saturday, June 9, to celebrate the rededication of the Church of Scientology Stevens Creek in San Jose.
The ceremony marked the transformation of the 57,000-square-foot Ideal Church of Scientology (Ideal Org) to better accommodate its ever-growing congregation and extend Church of Scientology humanitarian programs to all communities across Silicon Valley.
SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA •
On Saturday, June 2, city and state dignitaries joined thousands of Scientologists in downtown Santa Ana to dedicate the new Church of Scientology of Orange County.
GREATER CINCINNATI •
The Church of Scientology Greater Cincinnati celebrated the opening of its expansive new home Saturday, February 25. The inauguration was attended by more than a thousand Scientologists and state, county and city officials.
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA •
California’s capital celebrated the grand opening of the new Church of Scientology of Sacramento on Saturday, January 28. The dedication ceremony was attended by more than 2,500 Scientologists, guests and city, state and national officials.
HAMBURG, GERMANY •
On January 21, 2012, the Church of Scientology of Hamburg newly opened its doors to the city in a dedication ceremony attended by 1,500 Scientologists, guests and dignitaries. The grand opening marked the culmination of a transformation of the seven-story Church into an Ideal Church of Scientology (Ideal Org) to better meet the needs of Hamburg’s growing Scientology congregation and the community at large.
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA •
5,000 Scientologists, guests and city officials gathered Saturday November 5, for the dedication of an entirely new Church of Scientology and Church of Scientology Community Center. The Church stands in the heart of downtown, at 315 South Market Street, and reflects the growth of a new Scientology congregation amongst these communities. The neighboring Community Center stands just a few minutes away in South Los Angeles, at 8039 South Vermont Avenue.
