Scientologists Reach Huixquilucan Youth with Truth About Drugs

Volunteers from the National Scientology Organization of Mexico distributed drug education materials in Huixquilucan October 28 as part of an ongoing project to bring the truth about drugs to youth in the area.

Volunteers from the National Scientology Organization of Mexico bring the truth about drugs to Huixquilucan, a town of extremes, where lavish, high-end shops cater to clientele just blocks from one of the most impoverished barrios of Mexico City.

Here in the poorest neighborhoods, alcohol and inhalant abuse take their toll. According to Mexico’s Health Secretariat, the number of inhalant users in Mexico rose 70 percent from 2002 to 2008 and the number of people checking into drug treatment centers rose 80 percent during the same time period.

Volunteers from the Scientology-supported Truth About Drugs initiative reach out to the community to help youth avoid the devastating effects drugs can wreak in their lives.

The Truth About Drugs educational materials present the facts about these and other substances—what they look like, what they do when they are consumed, what they are called on the street, and common arguments circulated to make them seem safe or attractive, paired with factual information that dispels these myths.

The Truth About Inhalants and The Truth About Alcohol are two of a series of 13 booklets covering commonly abused drugs. The Truth About Drugs materials also include public service announcements and a feature-length documentary, The Truth About Drugs—Real People, Real Stories, where former addicts tell of the toll substance abuse took on their lives.

Scientologists on five continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education.

The Church of Scientology supports The Truth About Drugs initiative, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns.

It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.

The Church of Scientology has published a brochure, Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports. To learn more or read the brochure, visit the Scientology website.

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”
