In observance of the 64th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in December, the Venezuela Youth for Human Rights Foundation held an art competition and exhibit. The purpose of the project was to raise awareness of human rights through the arts, and human rights was the theme of the works of art submitted.

The exhibit first opened to the public October 10-31, 2012, at the Metropolis Mall of Valencia, and again on December 10, United Nations Human Rights Day, at the Center of Interpretation of Historical Culture of Carabobo University, where all competition artists were acknowledged and winners received their awards.

Scientologist Heidi Fajardo of Valencia, Venezuela, Executive Director of the Venezuela Youth for Human Rights Foundation, organized the contest and exhibition.

Fajardo, whose human rights awareness activities include lectures, workshops and radio broadcasts throughout the year, spoke of the importance of knowing the rights granted by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “If you know your rights, they will protect you—you can prevent discrimination, intolerance and injustice not only on an international or national level, but also at work, in the community, and within the family.”

The Church of Scientology has published a new brochure, Scientology: How We Help—United for Human Rights: Making Human Rights a Global Reality, to meet requests for more information about the human rights education and awareness initiative it supports. Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream,” and the Scientology religion is based on the principles of human rights. The Code of a Scientologist calls on all members of the religion to dedicate themselves “to support true humanitarian endeavors in the fields of human rights.”

Scientologists on five continents engage in collaborative efforts with government agencies and nongovernmental organizations to bring about broad-scale awareness and implementation of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s premier human rights document.
