Scientologists Forge Alliances to Quell Drug-Related Violence
Mexican Scientologists, active in drug prevention for more than 25 years, are gearing up for 2013, creating public- and private-sector alliances through the Truth About Drugs program to raise the bar on drug education.
In 2012, Scientologists joined forces with law enforcement, educational institutions and community leaders in Mexico to make inroads against the scourge of drug abuse and drug-related violence that has claimed the lives of more than 60,000 in the past six years.
Active in drug education and prevention for more than two decades, Mexican Scientologists greatly expanded the scope of their prevention activities in 2012 by making Truth About Drugs education lectures available to schools, NGOs, community leaders and thousands of police officers, including the capital’s school-safety police who are responsible for crime and drug prevention education in some 950 Mexico City schools.
Those attending Truth About Drugs lectures and workshops not only learn to provide effective drug education and prevention, they also become aware of the effects of the most commonly abused substances—knowledge that is essential for them to answer questions and direct youth to the information they need.
The Truth About Drugs program, supported by the Church of Scientology , draws on more than 25 years of experience in drug prevention. It has solved the problem of effectively communicating to teens and young adults the reality of drug abuse.
Experience and surveys show that teens and young adults are most open to listening to their peers, so the core message of the Truth About Drugs program is provided by young people who have gone down the path of addiction and survived to tell the story.
Scientologists hold a goal in common with government and private-sector leaders, educators and parents—to help young people steer clear of drugs. The Truth About Drugs program provides the know-how and wherewithal to accomplish that goal.
The Church of Scientology has published Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, a brochure to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports. Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”
The Church of Scientology supports the Truth About Drugs, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns. It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.
